22 years after the Avellaneda Massacre, family members and companions of Darío Santillán and Maximiliano Kosteki come together to denounce the release of former corporal Alejandro Acosta, one of the killers of both young men. The press conference will take place on Thursday, October 24 at 1 PM at the headquarters of Services Peace and Justice in Buenos Aires City. In this event, in addition to family and friends, the prosecuting lawyer and various human rights, social, and political organizations will join.
The massacre that took place on June 26, 2002, when Darío and Maxi were killed by the Police during a demonstration at the Pueyrredón Bridge in Avellaneda, triggered a profound political crisis that marked the departure of then-interim President Duhalde. Despite the conviction of those materially responsible for the crimes, the fight to find the political perpetrators has continued throughout all these years.
The release of Acosta is seen as a message of impunity from the judicial power that could set a dangerous precedent regarding police repression. There is a demand for the effective enforcement of the life imprisonment sentence for Acosta and Fanchiotti, the officers responsible for the murders of Darío and Maxi.
The press conference will provide information on the actions of federal judge Ariel Lijo and prosecutor Paloma Ochoa in the investigation of the political responsible parties of the Avellaneda Massacre. The aim is to keep the memory of Darío and Maxi alive and continue the fight for justice and truth in a case that shocked Argentine society.
